Part 1 – Goes to Java

This trip will be started in the afternoon or at 1:00 pm where we will use a minibus or comfortable car from South Bali. The pick-up time in Ubud is maybe around 2:00 p.m.

After we arrive in the harbor, we will use a ferry to go to Java. In the early evening, you can return to your rooms to take a rest for a few hours after having dinner.

Part 2 – Night Hike is Started

At 1:00 a.m., we will go to Kawah Ijen Base camp which is located 1,900 meters high, and meet the guides there. The guides will inform many important things, and provide you with masks and lamps.
At 2:00 a.m., this hike started. The guides will help us along the journey. This climb is done under the beautiful starry sky and it needs 1,5 – 2 hours to complete that.

Part 3 – Witnessing the Blue Flames

While you get to the top of the Mountain (2300 meters) be ready to be amazed with the unique and rare experience. The one and only, seeing the blue flames.

Take your time to capture and enjoy this moment. Soon after that, a beautiful sunrise will come over the biggest turquoise acid lake. It creates a contrasting shade which is amazing.

Then, you will be served with a view of the labor or workers who carry the huge sulfur blocks.

They do it by using their shoulder.

Part 4 – Back to the Base Camp

At around 6 or 7 a.m., we have to come back to the Basecamp. There are some challenges to accomplish. First of all, you should make a way up to the crater rim.

The next challenge is finishing the descent of the stratovolcano through the forest.

Part 5 – Enjoying a Breakfast

Now it is time to drive back to Bali. On the way, you will be served with the tasty buffet-style Javanese meals. These are prepared by a local family.

The schedule to reach the ferry is around 5-6 p.m.

What to Bring

Our tour is done in a volcano area which has 2 – 25 degrees Celsius temperature. To make your trip is a way more comfortable, we recommend you bring these items:

Sport or hiking shoes
Warm clothes such as a scarf, long pants, jacket, beanie, hat, etc.
Extra set of clothes to change into after having a hike
Wet wipes and rainwear
Small backpack for the climbing activity
ID card or a copy of it

My visit to Mount Ijen to witness the blue fire was an absolutely surreal experience. The hike to the summit was challenging, but the moment I laid eyes on the electric blue flames dancing in the darkness of the crater, I knew it was worth every step. The sight of the blue fire against the backdrop of the starry night sky left me speechless. It was like something out of a science fiction movie. I couldn't have asked for a more magical adventure!
